From the President:

Nancy Crow, President

As I read The Queen Mother, I remembered an article that I had saved from an old Anne Lander’s column. You remember her…the lady who tried to set us straight on which way to hang the toilet tissue. This article, written at least thirty years ago, was two pieces of barely legible type when retrieved from its hiding place. Why would anyone carry something around with them for that long? May I share it with you?

What is Class?
Class never runs scared. It is sure-footed and confident in the knowledge that you can meet life head on and handle whatever comes along.
Jacob had it. Esau didn’t. Symbolically we can look to Jacob’s wrestling match with the angel. Those who have class have wrestled with their own personal angel and won a victory that marks them thereafter.
Class is considerate of others. It knows that good manners are nothing more than a series of small sacrifices.
Class never tries to build itself up by tearing others down. Class is already up and need not strive to look better by making others look worse.
Class can “walk with kings and keep its virtue and talk with crowds and keep the common touch”. Everyone is comfortable with the person who has class because he is comfortable with himself. If you have class you don’t need much of anything else. If you don’t have it, no matter what else you have, you can not obtain it.*

Queen Elizabeth had class. She grew to be the matriarch of a nation because of her caring, free spirit. We have friends who have class. They warm our heart and keep us grounded. William Shawcross has class. He is truly a gift to our Club and community. It’s not always that we can keep in step with the latest in London and New York.

The authorized biography is well worth the read. The bookstores have sold out of copies. Our Club has ordered some books at the Random House discount price of 40% off. They will be sold as long as the supply lasts. This will give you a chance to get one autographed by Mr. Shawcross at the dinner on February 26.

Our Speaker Series will be a great success. Thank you, Ladies, for bringing this classy event into the heartbeat of our Club at 2020 Broadway.

Nicky Standlee and her committees are now putting plans in order for the April 16th Garage Sale. It is time to clean out your house and garage. Let’s make this our biggest sale ever.
